'I thought X, but in fact...' — the speaker's expectation is overturned, often with surprise. Literary and somewhat playful; used in writing and lively speech.
普通形（Nやna-adjは「だ」も可）＋と思いきや
簡単だと思いきや、意外に手こずった。
かんたんだとおもいきや、いがいにてこずった。
I thought it would be easy, but it gave me real trouble.
雨が降ると思いきや、見事に晴れた。
あめがふるとおもいきや、みごとにはれた。
I expected rain, but it turned out beautifully clear.
