〜ばそれまでだ
'If that happens, everything is over and nothing can be done'. Warns that one event would make all prior effort meaningless. Formal-ish spoken and written; 〜ばそれまでのことだ is the fuller form.
V-ば + それまでだ／それまでのことだ
どんな名機も、壊れてしまえばそれまでだ。
どんなめいきも、こわれてしまえばそれまでだ。
However fine the machine, once it breaks that's the end of it.
いくら準備しても、当日休めばそれまでだ。
いくらじゅんびしても、とうじつやすめばそれまでだ。
No matter how much you prepare, if you skip the day itself it's all for nothing.
才能があっても、努力しなければそれまでのことだ。
さいのうがあっても、どりょくしなければそれまでのことだ。
Even with talent, if you don't work at it that's the end of the story.
