Expresses regret or reproach: something good could easily have happened, but it didn't. Often follows a conditional and trails off. Written or emotional spoken register.
V/i-adj plain + ものを；na-adj な + ものを；N な + ものを
早く言ってくれれば手伝ったものを。
はやくいってくれればてつだったものを。
If you'd told me sooner, I would have helped you.
相談すればよかったものを、一人で抱え込んでしまった。
そうだんすればよかったものを、ひとりでかかえこんでしまった。
He should have asked for advice, yet he kept it all to himself.
黙っていれば済んだものを、余計なことを言った。
だまっていればすんだものを、よけいなことをいった。
He could have just kept quiet, but he had to say something unnecessary.
