〜あげく
Like 〜末に but the ending is always unwelcome: after all that trouble, a bad result came. Carries the speaker's exasperation; used in speech and writing alike.
V-た / N + の + あげく（に）
さんざん悩んだあげく、会社を辞めてしまった。
さんざんなやんだあげく、かいしゃをやめてしまった。
After agonizing over it, he ended up quitting the company.
何時間も待たされたあげく、面接は中止になった。
なんじかんもまたされたあげく、めんせつはちゅうしになった。
After being kept waiting for hours, the interview was called off.
言い争いのあげく、二人は口をきかなくなった。
いいあらそいのあげく、ふたりはくちをきかなくなった。
After all the arguing, the two stopped speaking to each other.
