Stresses that something happened right in the middle of an ongoing activity, almost always as an interruption. Neutral but emphatic; common in both conversation and writing.

会議の最中に携帯電話が鳴ってしまった。
かいぎのさいちゅうにけいたいでんわがなってしまった。
My mobile phone rang right in the middle of the meeting.
食事をしている最中に、突然停電した。
しょくじをしているさいちゅうに、とつぜんていでんした。
The power suddenly went out right while we were eating.
試験の最中に、隣の人が話しかけてきた。
