ところが

Sentence + ところが + sentence. Means "however / but", introducing a result that is contrary to what was expected.

S1。ところが、S2

晴れると思った。ところが、雨が降った。

はれるとおもった。ところが、あめがふった。

I thought it would be sunny. But it rained.
早く着いた。ところが、店は閉まっていた。

はやくついた。ところが、みせはしまっていた。

I arrived early. However, the shop was closed.
簡単だと聞いた。ところが、とても難しかった。

かんたんだときいた。ところが、とてもむずかしかった。

I heard it was easy. But it was really hard.
