A town that looks after itself

In English
In Kaede Town one resident in three is aged sixty-five or over. There are fewer children, shops have closed and the buses run less often. For elderly people who can no longer drive, getting to the shops or to hospital has become a serious problem.
Three years ago, therefore, the people of the town set up a scheme called "the helping-hand car". Residents who can drive register, and take those who need it to hospital or the supermarket. No money changes hands. Instead the person who is driven hands over one "thank-you card", and those who collect cards can trade them for vegetables at the town festival.
One of the founders explains: "Once money is involved, both the asking and the being asked become heavy. With a card, being helped does not feel like a bad thing. That was what mattered most."
At present forty-two drivers are registered and more than a hundred people use the service. Of course it is not without problems: who would be responsible in an accident, and the worry that the drivers themselves are growing older. Even so, people in the town say with one voice that the biggest change is this — they no longer feel ashamed to rely on someone.
