An interview with a baker
Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 458 characters.

In English
— How long have you had the shop?
Twenty-two years. I did something else at first. Just before I turned thirty I left the company and got a job at a bakery, telling myself it would be for one year only. Somehow that has gone on until today.
— What was hard?
For the first five years, honestly, I wanted to quit every day. My body would not get used to getting up at two in the morning, and there were days on end when I baked and threw the bread away unsold. When a big supermarket opened nearby I even thought about closing.
— And why did you keep going?
Because customers kept me going. One morning an elderly customer said, "My husband won't eat bread unless it's from here." Hearing that, I understood that there really were people waiting for my bread. That one sentence gave me far more strength than the sales figures.
— What are your plans now?
I have no intention of getting bigger. The same size shop, selling to customers whose faces I know. But I would like to teach young people more. I think of the craft as something I am holding in trust rather than something that belongs to me.
