プレゼントを選ぶ — Choosing a present
Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 327 characters.
らいしゅう、いもうとのたんじょうびです。何をあげようかといっしゅうかんほどなやんでいました。いもうとは去年から一人でくらしはじめ、仕事もいそがしそうです。
はじめは服にしようと思いましたが、好みが分からないのでやめました。次におかしを考えましたが、あまいものは苦手だと言っていた気がします。母に相談すると、「自分ではかわないけれど、あるとうれしいものがいいんじゃない」と言われました。
それで、少し高いタオルをにまい選びました。毎日使うのに、自分のためには安いものですませてしまうものだからです。店員さんにつつんでもらい、みじかい手紙をつけました。気に入ってくれるかどうかは分かりませんが、いもうとのことをいっしゅうかん考えていたということは伝わるはずです。

Next week is my younger sister's birthday. I spent about a week agonising over what to give her. She started living on her own last year and her job seems busy.
At first I thought of clothes, but I gave up because I do not know her taste. Next I considered sweets, but I have a feeling she said she does not like sweet things. When I asked my mother, she said, "Something she wouldn't buy for herself but would be glad to have — how about that?"
So I chose two slightly expensive towels: things you use every day but make do with the cheap version when they are only for yourself. I had the shop assistant wrap them and added a short letter. I do not know whether she will like them, but the fact that I spent a week thinking about her ought to get across.
