In English
As long as you live in Japan you cannot escape earthquakes entirely. Here is a summary of what to do when you feel the ground shake.
First, do not move while it is shaking. Rushing outside risks being hit by falling objects. Get under a desk and protect your head; if there is no desk, even covering your head with a bag or a book makes a difference.
Once the shaking dies down, check for fire. Most modern gas appliances shut off automatically, but look with your own eyes to be sure. Next, open the front door to make yourself an exit — if the building twists, the door may not open later.
When you go outside, always put shoes on, because there is often glass on the floor. Evacuation places are designated at nearby schools and parks. It is a good idea to agree in advance with your family that you will meet there, since phones are hard to connect immediately after an earthquake.
Keep water and food, three days' worth as a rough guide. There is no need to buy anything special. Keep a little more than usual of what you normally eat and use the oldest first — that is the method most likely to last.
