The power of a greeting
Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 418 characters.

In English
When I had just moved in, I did not even know the face of the person next door. We lived in the same building, yet if we met in the lift we would not make eye contact. I thought that was simply what a city was.
One morning, as I went to put out the rubbish, an elderly man said, "Good morning." Surprised as I was, I answered the same way. It was nothing more than that, but I remember feeling good all day.
From the next day I started greeting people first. At first some did not reply, but after six months I felt that the atmosphere in the building had changed a little. On the night of a typhoon, the man from the floor above came to ask, "Are your windows all right?"
A greeting is not, I think, a thing for changing other people. It only says, "I know you are there." And yet whether we can help each other when trouble comes may begin exactly there.
