In English
The four of us spent a night at an old inn in the mountains. What had bothered me since booking was the number of warnings on its website: meals in the dining room, not your room; the bath closes at ten at night. To be honest I was a little worried that it would be a strict sort of place.
When we arrived, though, the impression was completely different. The inn is run by an elderly couple and their son, just the three of them, and I understood that they write these things honestly in advance because what they can do is limited. The rooms are not new, but they were well cleaned, and there was a view of the valley from the window.
Dinner was mostly mountain vegetables and river fish, and the portions were by no means large. I wondered whether it would be enough for the children, but they were given second helpings of rice and in the end ate well. There are two small baths, used by men and women in turn by time slot. They close at ten because the mother cleans them alone in the morning.
The price is about 10,000 yen a head. I would not recommend it to anyone looking for luxury. But the ten minutes I spent in the morning watching, in silence, the mist settle over the valley were not something a price can be compared against. A place with many warnings on its website is not necessarily a strict one.
