The time I got lost

Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 437 characters.

In English
Two years ago I travelled abroad alone for the first time. I thought a map app would be enough, but on the third night my phone's battery died.
I could not remember the name of the station or of the street my hotel was on, and I had no paper map. Walking down the dark streets, I thought: this is bad. Hardly any of my words got through, either.
In the end I went into a bakery that was still open and showed the woman there nothing but the name of the hotel. She shook her head, but called a young man from the back of the shop who seemed to be her son. He spoke a little English, found the hotel on his own phone and drew me a map on a piece of paper. He even came outside and walked with me as far as the first corner.
I reached the hotel after eleven at night. We parted before I could properly thank him, and it stays with me still. Ever since, when I travel I put one paper map in my bag. And I would like, somewhere, some day, to pass on what I was given that night.
