In English
In Midori City the way rubbish is sorted changed five years ago. Before there were only two categories, burnable and non-burnable; now everything must be separated into eight — plastic, paper, bottles, cans, PET bottles and so on.
When it began, many residents complained that it was a nuisance. At the collection points in the morning there were even arguments over how things should be put out, they say. The city held meetings in each district and delivered an illustrated chart to every household. Charts in five foreign languages were prepared as well.
As a result the volume of burnable rubbish has fallen by thirty percent in five years. With less to burn, the cost of incineration has come down too, and that money is being spent on the upkeep of parks. On the other hand, a problem remains: for elderly residents, carrying heavy bottles to a distant collection point is a burden.
The city official in charge says, "Rather than having people sort perfectly, what matters first is that they keep doing it." From next year a collection service that calls at the homes of those who ask for it is due to begin.
