Time to read

In English
More and more people say they have stopped reading. One survey found that nearly half of adults do not read a single book in a month. The reason given most often is that they have no time.
But is there really no time? According to the same survey, people spend on average more than three hours a day looking at their phones. In other words, it may be more accurate to say not that time has disappeared but that the way we use it has changed.
I myself hardly read at all until a few years ago. So I decided on fifteen minutes before bed, and no more, and started leaving my phone in another room. As a result I now get through about two books a month. Fifteen minutes a day comes to ninety hours a year. I used to think that "time is something you make" was an empty phrase; it appears not to be.
Of course, reading a book does not guarantee that you will understand anything. Most of what I read is forgotten within a month. Even so, the experience of hearing another person's thinking through to the end is a different thing from reading any number of short pieces. At a time when we are told that fewer people can listen to someone they disagree with all the way through, time spent reading seems to me to have a meaning beyond acquiring knowledge.
