Working from home

Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 433 characters.

In English
More and more people work at home rather than going in to the office. At my company too we are allowed to work from home half the week. Simply not having to take the morning train makes the day feel an hour longer.
There are other advantages. You can do the washing at midday and eat with your family in the evening. Work that needs concentration goes faster at home, where nobody speaks to you; in fact the time I spend writing reports has roughly halved.
But there are difficulties. The biggest is how hard it is to ask something. What at the office takes one "Have you got a moment?" becomes, at home, either a phone call or an email, and that alone makes you reluctant. People also say that new staff find it harder to learn the job — because much of work is not taught but picked up naturally from the conversation at the next desk.
Asking whether working from home is good or bad may not mean very much. What matters, surely, is deciding which work we do alone and which we do together.
