In English
Next month I have been invited to a university friend's wedding. It is my first Japanese wedding, and there is a lot I don't know — what to wear, what to bring. When I asked a senior colleague, she explained. First, clothes: men wear a black or navy suit with a white tie; women a dress in anything but white. White is the bride's colour and must not be worn. Then you bring money, called goshūgi: for a friend, about 30,000 yen is normal, in new notes, handed over in a special envelope. I was told to avoid 20,000 yen, because "two" carries the meaning of "splitting in two". At first it seemed a lot of trouble, but learning the customs is interesting. On the day I want to go early and not forget to write my name at the reception desk.
