めんせつ — A job interview

Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 478 characters.

In English
Next week I have an interview at a Japanese company — my first in Japanese — so I have started preparing now. First, I hear Japanese interviews follow a set procedure: knock three times before entering, say "shitsurei shimasu", then go in; stand beside the chair and give your name; sit only when told to. When it is over, say thank you once more, and "shitsurei shimasu" again before leaving. The usual questions are a self-introduction, why you want the job, and your strengths and weaknesses. I have written answers and practise them aloud every night. My teacher told me short, clear sentences are better than difficult words. I bought a black suit — in Japan, I'm told, one does not show individuality in interview clothes. A slightly strange custom, I think, but this time I'll go along with it. I don't know how it will turn out, but rather than not preparing and regretting it later, I want to do everything I can beforehand.
