Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 295 characters.

In English
On Sunday I took part in the city's cooking class. This month's theme was "simple Japanese food" and we made miso soup and nikujaga. The teacher is a woman of seventy who, I hear, has been teaching cooking for forty years. She said, "Never bring miso soup back to the boil after adding the miso — it spoils the taste." I had always boiled it, so I was surprised. The nikujaga took a long time because of cutting the vegetables, but I think it tasted better than a restaurant's. The person next to me was using a kitchen knife for the first time and ended up cutting her finger a little. The class is once a month and costs 2,000 yen. Next month is fish, apparently. I'd like to go again.
