In English
Today is 31 December: a year since I came to Japan. I want to look back on it. When I arrived I couldn't even read hiragana. Paying at a convenience store, I understood nothing the staff said and just nodded. In April I entered a Japanese language school and studied four hours a day; by May I could read all the kana, and by summer I could hold simple conversations. The hardest time was starting a part-time job in the autumn. I didn't understand polite language and once said something rude to a customer without meaning to. But the manager and my colleagues patiently taught me, and now I can even answer the phone. I think I passed the JLPT N4 I took in December; the results come at the end of January. Three goals for next year: pass N3, finish one book in Japanese, and make more Japanese friends. If the me of a year ago could see the me of today, she would surely be astonished. I'll work so that I can say the same this time next year.
