Read the passage twice — once for the gist, once slowly — then answer the questions. Every kanji has its reading above it; the words in the box are the ones worth knowing. 410 characters.

In English
I am planning a trip to Kyoto with a friend over the winter holiday — two nights, three days, with a budget of 40,000 yen each. Transport first: the bullet train gets there from Tokyo in a little over two hours, but the return fare is a hefty 27,000 yen. An overnight bus is about 10,000 yen return, but takes eight hours and the seats are narrow, so we might not sleep. My friend said "let's buy time with money" and we settled on the train. We booked a cheap hotel near the station, 6,000 yen a night with breakfast. There are lots of places we want to see, but three days won't cover them all, so we decided: day one the east side, day two the west, walking between places that are close together. Day three we leave free, for anywhere we missed or want to see again. I'm looking forward to it, but what worries me most is the weather — I've heard Kyoto is cold in winter, so I'll take warm clothes.
