In English
Last Saturday my daughter's primary school had its sports day, a big event in Japanese schools that the whole family comes to watch. I got up at six to make a packed lunch and was at the school by seven to get a good spot — and even so, about twenty people were already queuing at the gate. My daughter ran the 50 metres and danced. In the race she came third of four, but she ran flat out to the end. The dance she had practised at home every day, so it went well. At noon we ate our lunch as a family. The family next to us shared their rice balls with us and we got talking; we were surprised to find our children are in the same class. When we got home in the evening my daughter fell asleep at once. I had caught the sun and my face had gone red. It was tiring, but a good day.
