〜くらいなら

"Rather than do X, I'd sooner do Y." X is presented as the option the speaker finds unbearable. Common in speech and writing alike.

「Xするより、むしろYのほうがいい」と比較して言う。

Formation: V-dict + くらいなら（後件に 〜ほうがましだ／〜ほうがいい）

Example sentences

  1. 満員電車に乗るくらいなら歩いた方がましだ。

    まんいんでんしゃにのるくらいならあるいたほうがましだ。

    I'd rather walk than get on a packed train.

  2. 後で謝るくらいなら、初めからやらないでほしい。

    あとであやまるくらいなら、はじめからやらないでほしい。

    If you're only going to apologize later, I'd rather you didn't do it at all.

  3. 途中でやめるくらいなら、引き受けなければよかった。

    とちゅうでやめるくらいなら、ひきうけなければよかった。

    If I was going to quit halfway, I shouldn't have taken it on.
