512 numbered units, levels A to L · no account, no ads, nothing to install
First time here? Three steps.
-
Find your starting point
The course runs from A to L. If Japanese writing is completely new to you, begin at the beginning — you do not need to know anything at all. If you already read kana, skip ahead. Nothing is locked.
-
Print the sheet — or just use it on screen
Every unit opens as one A4 page in your browser. Press the print button at the top (or Ctrl/Cmd + P) and choose your printer, or “Save as PDF” to keep it. There is no download step and no file to sign up for.
-
Tick it off and carry on
On the course page you can tick each unit you finish. The ticks are kept in your own browser — no account, nothing sent anywhere — and the button at the top of this page then says Continue at your next unit.

What is in here
Hiragana

The same sounds, angular. Used for foreign words: コーヒー, パン.
Kanji
2184 worksheets — N5 to N1, with stroke order, on/kun and example words.
Characters that carry meaning. Grouped into sets you can actually use.
Grammar
521 worksheets — N5 to N1, each with the formation rule and example sentences.
How the words join up. One pattern per block, with real sentences.
Reading
20 N5 passages, 65 to 200 characters, with furigana, questions and answers.
Where the pieces meet. Only the 80 N5 kanji, so nothing needs a dictionary.
Vocabulary
600 JLPT N5 words in 30 sets — family, the clock, food, verbs, adjectives — each a two-page sheet: study, then recall from memory.
The words the kanji are used in. Every word in exactly one set, so all thirty sheets is the whole list once.

The whole course, on one ladder
Twelve levels, A to L. Every unit is one printable sheet, so you always know where you are — not “somewhere in N3”, but G14.
This is what you print
Unit C1, the ten number kanji, on one A4 page. Stroke order, readings, real words, and room to write. Live preview of the actual sheet — nothing to download first.
Every one of the 512 units prints like this. No account, no watermark, CC BY-SA 4.0.
Teaching Japanese? Take all of it.
Not “free to view”. The licence is CC BY-SA 4.0, which means you may do all of this without asking us:
Print a class set
Thirty copies, every week, for as many classes as you like. No per-seat licence, no account for your students, nothing for them to sign up to.
Use them in paid lessons
Private tutoring, a language school, a paid course — commercial use is allowed. Keep the credit line at the foot of the page.
Change them
Cut a set down, reorder it, put it in your own handout. Share what you make under the same licence and it is yours to hand out.
Nothing to install or wait for
Every sheet is one A4 page that opens in a browser. Ctrl/Cmd + P and it is on the printer, or Save as PDF for the class group.
Using these with a class? Tell us what is missing — teachers are how we find out which sheets are wrong.
Questions people ask first
- Do I need an account?
- No. There is nothing to sign up for, no email box, and no paid tier waiting further down. Every sheet on the site opens straight away.
- Is it really free? What is the catch?
- It is free and there are no ads. Everything is published under CC BY-SA 4.0, so you may copy it, print it and hand it out.
- Can I use these with my class?
- Yes — print as many copies as you need, for any number of students, including in paid lessons. Keep the credit line at the bottom of the page. Notes for teachers →
- I cannot read any Japanese yet.
- That is the intended starting point. Level A assumes nothing: you trace each character, then recognise it, then write it from memory.
- How long does a sheet take?
- Ten to twenty minutes. One a day is a realistic pace, and finishing one finishes a unit — that is the whole design.
- Do the instructions come in my language?
- The worksheet instructions switch between 50 languages with the menu at the top of each sheet — the Japanese itself stays as it is. See the list →
