〜びる / 〜じみる

Attaches to a noun to say something takes on the air or appearance of it. 〜びる is fairly neutral (大人びる); 〜じみる is usually negative (子供じみる, 芝居じみる). Mostly written/formal.

名詞に付いて「そのような様子を帯びる」意を表す。「じみる」は否定的。

Formation: N + びる / N + じみる; attributive: N + びた / N + じみた + N

Example sentences

  1. 彼女は年齢のわりに大人びた話し方をする。

    かのじょはねんれいのわりにおとなびたはなしかたをする。

    She speaks in a way that sounds more grown-up than her age.

  2. そんな子供じみた言い訳は通用しない。

    そんなこどもじみたいいわけはつうようしない。

    That kind of childish excuse won't fly.

  3. 彼の芝居じみた態度に皆があきれた。

    かれのしばいじみたたいどにみんながあきれた。

    Everyone was exasperated by his theatrical manner.
