〜よりほかない

States that no option remains but this one, often with reluctance. A formal equivalent of 〜しかない; common in writing and careful speech.

「それ以外に方法がない」と、やむを得ない選択を表す硬い表現。

Formation: V-dict + よりほかない (＝よりほかはない／ほかしかたがない)

Example sentences

  1. 終電がないので、歩いて帰るよりほかない。

    しゅうでんがないので、あるいてかえるよりほかない。

    There's no last train, so I have no choice but to walk home.

  2. 資金が尽きた以上、計画を中止するよりほかない。

    しきんがつきたいじょう、けいかくをちゅうしするよりほかない。

    Now that the funds are gone, we can only cancel the plan.

  3. 我々はただ結果を待つよりほかなかった。

    われわれはただけっかをまつよりほかなかった。

    We could do nothing but wait for the results.
