〜ものの

Concedes that something is true, then says the expected result did not follow. Close to けれど but stiffer; mainly written and formal speech.

事実は認めるが、期待どおりにならないと述べる逆接。

Formation: V / i-adj plain + ものの；na-adj な・である + ものの；N である + ものの

Example sentences

  1. 引き受けたものの、自信はない。

    ひきうけたものの、じしんはない。

    I took the job on, but I have no confidence.

  2. 大学は出たものの、就職先が決まらない。

    だいがくはでたものの、しゅうしょくさきがきまらない。

    I did graduate from university, but I still have no job lined up.

  3. 便利ではあるものの、値段が高すぎる。

    べんりではあるものの、ねだんがたかすぎる。

    It is convenient, but the price is too high.
