〜ことに

Puts the speaker's feeling first, before stating the fact: to my surprise, luckily, sadly. Only works with emotion words. Slightly formal, common in written accounts.

感情を表す語について、驚き・残念などを先に示す。

Formation: V-ta / i-adj い / na-adj な + ことに（感情語のみ）

Example sentences

  1. 驚いたことに、彼は試験に一発で合格した。

    おどろいたことに、かれはしけんにいっぱつでごうかくした。

    To my surprise, he passed the exam on his first try.

  2. 残念なことに、試合は雨で中止になった。

    ざんねんなことに、しあいはあめでちゅうしになった。

    Unfortunately, the match was called off because of rain.

  3. うれしいことに、給料が上がった。

    うれしいことに、きゅうりょうがあがった。

    To my delight, my salary went up.
