〜かねる

A polite way to say you cannot do something, because it is difficult or against the rules. Very common in business Japanese as 〜かねます, softer than できません.

事情があってできないと丁寧に断るビジネス表現。

Formation: V-masu stem + かねる（丁寧形：〜かねます）

Example sentences

  1. 申し訳ありませんが、その件はお答えしかねます。

    もうしわけありませんが、そのけんはおこたえしかねます。

    I'm very sorry, but I am not able to answer that.

  2. ご要望には応じかねますので、ご了承ください。

    ごようぼうにはおうじかねますので、ごりょうしょうください。

    We are unable to meet your request, so we ask for your understanding.

  3. 一人で決めかねて、上司に相談した。

    ひとりできめかねて、じょうしにそうだんした。

    Unable to decide on my own, I consulted my boss.
