〜得る / 〜得ない

States that something is theoretically possible or impossible. The dictionary form reads うる or える, but the negative is always えない. Formal and written.

理論上の可能・不可能を表す硬い表現。否定は「えない」。

Formation: V-masu stem + 得る（うる／える）／得ない（えない）

Example sentences

  1. 誰にでも起こり得る問題だ。

    だれにでもおこりうるもんだいだ。

    It's a problem that could happen to anyone.

  2. そんなことはあり得ない。

    そんなことはありえない。

    That simply can't be.

  3. この計画は十分に実現し得る。

    このけいかくはじゅうぶんにじつげんしうる。

    This plan is entirely capable of being realized.
