〜きる / 〜きれない

〜きる means doing something completely, all the way to the end; 〜きれない means being unable to finish or handle it all. Both attach to the verb stem; everyday register.

「〜きる」は最後までやり終える、「〜きれない」はやり切れない。

Formation: V-ます形 + きる／きれる／きれない

Example sentences

  1. 一日でこの本を読みきった。

    いちにちでこのほんをよみきった。

    I finished reading this book in a single day.

  2. 料理の量が多すぎて食べきれない。

    りょうりのりょうがおおすぎてたべきれない。

    There's too much food; I can't finish it.

  3. つらかったが、最後まで走りきった。

    つらかったが、さいごまではしりきった。

    It was hard, but I ran all the way to the finish.
