〜つつ

A written-style 〜ながら: either two simultaneous actions by the same person, or 'even though I know X, I still do Y' (with つつも especially).

書き言葉の「〜ながら」。同時動作、または逆接を表す。

Formation: V-ます形 + つつ（も）

Example sentences

  1. 悪いと知りつつ、うそをついてしまった。

    わるいとしりつつ、うそをついてしまった。

    Even knowing it was wrong, I ended up telling a lie.

  2. 音楽を聞きつつ、レポートを書いた。

    おんがくをききつつ、レポートをかいた。

    I wrote the report while listening to music.

  3. 体に悪いと思いつつ、たばこをやめられない。

    からだにわるいとおもいつつ、たばこをやめられない。

    Although I know it's bad for me, I can't quit smoking.
