〜ないうちに

Do something while a situation has not yet changed: before it gets dark, before you forget. Neutral register, used freely in everyday spoken and written Japanese.

その状態にならない間に何かをする、という意味。

Formation: V-ない ／ i-adjくない ／ na-adjでない + うちに

Example sentences

  1. 暗くならないうちに家に帰りましょう。

    くらくならないうちにいえにかえりましょう。

    Let's go home before it gets dark.

  2. 雨が降らないうちに洗濯物を取り込んだ。

    あめがふらないうちにせんたくものをとりこんだ。

    I brought the laundry in before it started to rain.

  3. 忘れないうちにメモしておいたほうがいい。

    わすれないうちにメモしておいたほうがいい。

    You'd better write it down before you forget.
