〜まい / 〜まいか

Literary negative: firm resolve ('I will never...') or conjecture ('probably not'). Stiff and old-fashioned, mainly in writing, speeches and set phrases like ではあるまいか.

否定の意志「〜しない」や否定の推量「〜ないだろう」を表す文語。

Formation: V-dict + まい（II類は V-stem + まい も可、する→すまい）

Example sentences

  1. あんな店には二度と行くまい。

    あんなみせにはにどといくまい。

    I will never go to a shop like that again.

  2. 同じ失敗は二度とするまいと心に誓った。

    おなじしっぱいはにどとするまいとこころにちかった。

    I swore to myself never to make the same mistake again.

  3. 彼も同じことを考えているのではあるまいか。

    かれもおなじことをかんがえているのではあるまいか。

    I suspect he may well be thinking the same thing.
