〜ないことには

Unless the first thing is done, the second is impossible or cannot be known. The main clause is always negative. Neutral register, common in explanation and discussion.

前提となる行為をしなければ後は成り立たないと表す。

Formation: V-ない ／ i-adjくない ／ Nでない + ことには（後は否定）

Example sentences

  1. 実際に見てみないことには、判断できない。

    じっさいにみてみないことには、はんだんできない。

    I can't make a judgment unless I actually see it.

  2. 予算が決まらないことには、計画を進められない。

    よさんがきまらないことには、けいかくをすすめられない。

    We can't move the plan forward unless the budget is settled.

  3. 本人に聞いてみないことには、本当のことは分からない。

    ほんにんにきいてみないことには、ほんとうのことはわからない。

    We won't know the truth unless we ask the person themselves.
