A hot-spring day from Tokyo
東京から温泉へ日帰り とうきょうからおんせんへひがえり
Wellness · Nature · Book ahead
The real thing is ninety minutes away: Hakone by Romancecar from Shinjuku, with day-use baths at ryokan overlooking the valley; Kusatsu or Kinugawa by rail; or, without leaving the city, the bayside onsen at Toyosu and the black-water baths of the low city. A day trip needs no luggage — the ryokan lend towels and yukata — and returns you to the Shinjuku neon by eight.

Where to book it
Shinjuku
Hato Bus (Hakone tour)
はとバス(箱根コース)
¥¥¥ · 600 min · English: yes
Tokyo's oldest sightseeing bus operator (running since 1948) offers a dedicated Hakone day course out of central Tokyo, taking the hot-spring day trip off travellers' hands as a fully guided coach itinerary rather than a self-arranged train journey.
Shinjuku
Odakyu Hakone Freepass
小田急 箱根フリーパス
¥¥ · 480 min · English: yes
The rail operator's own all-in-one pass departing directly from Shinjuku, covering the train there and unlimited use of the local buses, cable car and pirate-ship cruise around Hakone's onsen towns for the pass's validity period. Buying straight from Odakyu rather than a reseller means the English booking flow and any changes go through the operator that actually runs the trains.
