Throwing a bowl on the wheel
陶芸——ろくろで茶碗を とうげいろくろでちゃわんを
Craft · With children · Rainy day · Book ahead
Ninety minutes at an electric wheel with a teacher who steadies your hands, one or two bowls made, glazed by the studio and fired over the following weeks, then posted home. Tokyo has dozens of studios that teach in English; the ones near Asakusa, Aoyama and Meguro are used to visitors. The bowl you make is worse than one you could buy and better than anything you could buy.
- How to arrange it
- Book a week ahead; allow six to eight weeks for firing and international shipping, which most studios arrange.

Where to book it
Asakusa
Pottery Studio EN
陶房円
¥¥ · 90 min · English: yes
A small neighbourhood studio near Asakusa offering trial wheel classes explicitly in English and Chinese, with a relaxed hands-in-the-clay approach rather than a scripted routine — for someone who wants an unhurried session over a big group studio.
Aoyama & Omotesando
TNCA (Taku Nakano CeramicArts)
TNCA 中野拓陶芸
¥¥¥ · 90 min · English: yes
Run by the ceramic artist Taku Nakano in a Minami-Aoyama studio-museum, this goes beyond a tourist wheel taster, with a proprietary teaching method and the artist's own gold and lacquer techniques on view — for visitors who want more than a souvenir bowl.
