What the book is

It is Level A of the course — the same 50 sheets you can print from this site, bound in order, with the three things a folder of printouts does not give you: a progress chart you tick, a chapter on the pairs everyone confuses, and an answer key to every exercise. Ten chapters of one kana row each, always in the same three steps: trace it, match it to its sound, then write it from memory.

The Kindle edition is a fixed-layout copy of the paper book. You cannot write in it; read a chapter on the screen, then print that chapter's sheets from the list below and write on paper. That is not a workaround — it is the way the book is meant to be used on a device.

Print the sheets for each chapter

Every sheet opens in your browser as one A4 page. Ctrl/Cmd + P prints it, or Save as PDF keeps it. No account, no watermark, CC BY-SA 4.0.

The rest of the book

The sections after chapter 11 are not single-kana units, so they sit beside the ladder rather than in it. Each is one A4 sheet:

What is only in the book

Two things: the progress chart on page 5, and the answer key to every match and from-memory exercise — 14 pages of it. On the site the kana sheets have no keys (a teacher marks them, or you check against the chart); in the book you can mark your own.

Both editions carry the same licence as the site. Copying a page for your class is allowed; so is the whole book, with credit.

Teaching with it

One copy of the book per teacher and the free sheets for the class is the arrangement it was designed for. The progress chart on page 5 is the same 50 units as the course page, so a student who is on A14 in the book is on A14 here. Notes for teachers →

Found a mistake? A wrong stroke in a writing book gets practised, which is worse than a typo anywhere else. Tell us and it is fixed in the next printing and on the site the same day.
