Beyond single characters
Real words on genkōyōshi squares, the yōon combinations, the pairs everyone confuses, and blank squared paper. Companions to the ladder, not units of it.
Real words 1–10 · ことば 1〜10 Ten words written only in hiragana you already know, copied square by square on genkōyōshi — one character per square, which is how spacing is learned. Real words 11–20 · ことば 11〜20 Ten words written only in hiragana you already know, copied square by square on genkōyōshi — one character per square, which is how spacing is learned. Real words 21–30 · ことば 21〜30 Ten words written only in hiragana you already know, copied square by square on genkōyōshi — one character per square, which is how spacing is learned. Real words 31–40 · ことば 31〜40 Ten words written only in hiragana you already know, copied square by square on genkōyōshi — one character per square, which is how spacing is learned. Yōon 1: きゃ to みょ · 拗音 1 A yōon takes two squares, never one: the small kana has its own square, in its lower half. Trace the row, then write it again from memory on the line below. Yōon 2: りゃ to ぴょ · 拗音 2 The rest of the combinations, including the voiced ones. Same rule: two squares, small kana low and to the right. Confusable pairs 1: め/ぬ は/ほ さ/き る/ろ · 似ている字 1 Four pairs cause most beginners' misreadings. Look at what tells them apart, then write each one three times without looking back. Confusable pairs 2: わ/ね ね/れ つ/し こ/い · 似ている字 2 Four more. ね is in two of them — it is the one that loops, every time.
