〜はいざ知らず

Sets X aside as a possible exception and asserts something different about the main case. Formal, slightly literary; often mildly critical.

Ｘは別として、こちらは違うと述べる硬い表現。

Formation: N + はいざ知らず（plain clause + かはいざ知らず も可）

  1. 昔はいざ知らず、今は誰も手紙を書かない。

    むかしはいざしらず、いまはだれもてがみをかかない。

    I don't know about the old days, but nowadays nobody writes letters.

  2. 専門家はいざ知らず、素人にこの違いは分からない。

    せんもんかはいざしらず、しろうとにこのちがいはわからない。

    Experts aside, a layperson cannot tell this difference.

  3. 新入社員はいざ知らず、部長が知らないとは驚きだ。

    しんにゅうしゃいんはいざしらず、ぶちょうがしらないとはおどろきだ。

    A new employee is one thing, but it's surprising the manager doesn't know.
