〜（よ）うにも〜ない

Means you want to do it but circumstances make it impossible. Neutral register; the second verb must be a potential negative.

したくても事情があってできないことを表す表現。

Formation: V-vol + にも + 同じ動詞の可能形の否定

  1. 熱が高くて、起きようにも起きられなかった。

    ねつがたかくて、おきようにもおきられなかった。

    My fever was so high that I couldn't get up even though I wanted to.

  2. 資料がないので、報告書を書こうにも書けない。

    しりょうがないので、ほうこくしょをかこうにもかけない。

    Without the materials, I can't write the report even if I try.

  3. 電車が止まり、帰ろうにも帰れない状況だ。

    でんしゃがとまり、かえろうにもかえれないじょうきょうだ。

    The trains have stopped, so I can't get home even if I want to.
