〜ずじまい

Says something one intended to do never got done, with a note of regret. Slightly literary but used in everyday speech too.

しようと思ったまま結局しなかったという後悔の表現。

Formation: V-nai stem + ずじまい（する→せずじまい）

Example sentences

  1. 忙しくて、結局その本は読まずじまいだった。

    いそがしくて、けっきょくそのほんはよまずじまいだった。

    I was busy and in the end never got around to reading that book.

  2. 彼には結局会わずじまいで帰国した。

    かれにはけっきょくあわずじまいできこくした。

    I went home without ever managing to meet him.

  3. お礼を言わずじまいになってしまい、悔やまれる。

    おれいをいわずじまいになってしまい、くやまれる。

    I ended up never thanking them, which I regret.
