'As if about to do X' — describes an appearance or manner that stops just short of the action. Literary; used to describe others.

今にもXしそうな様子を表す、文語的な比喩表現。

Formation: V-nai stem + んばかりに／んばかりの + N；する→せんばかり

Example sentences

  1. 彼は泣き出さんばかりの顔でうつむいた。

    かれはなきださんばかりのかおでうつむいた。

    He looked down with a face that seemed about to burst into tears.

  2. 会場は割れんばかりの拍手に包まれた。

    かいじょうはわれんばかりのはくしゅにつつまれた。

    The hall was filled with thunderous applause.
