〜ずには済まない

'You can't get away without doing X' — social pressure or circumstances make the action unavoidable. Formal written equivalent of 〜ないでは済まない.

事情や社会通念上、Xしないでは終われないことを表す。

Formation: V-nai stem + ずには済まない；する→せずには済まない

Example sentences

  1. 迷惑をかけた以上、謝らずには済まないだろう。

    めいわくをかけたいじょう、あやまらずにはすまないだろう。

    Since we caused trouble, we surely can't get away without apologizing.

  2. 事故の原因を調べずには済まない。

    じこのげんいんをしらべずにはすまない。

    There's no way we can avoid investigating the cause of the accident.

  3. 契約違反となれば、賠償金を払わずには済まない。

    けいやくいはんとなれば、ばいしょうきんをはらわずにはすまない。

    If it counts as a breach of contract, we can't escape paying damages.
