〜こそすれ

Formal written pattern: "it may well do X, but certainly not Y." Affirms one thing emphatically while denying the opposite in the following clause.

「〜することはあっても、決して〜ない」の硬い書き言葉。

Formation: V-masu stem + こそすれ；N（する動詞の語幹：悪化・感謝 等）+ こそすれ；N・na-adj語幹 + でこそあれ（後件は否定）

Example sentences

  1. 状況は悪化こそすれ、改善はしていない。

    じょうきょうはあっかこそすれ、かいぜんはしていない。

    The situation has only worsened; it certainly hasn't improved.

  2. 彼には感謝こそすれ、恨む理由はない。

    かれにはかんしゃこそすれ、うらむりゆうはない。

    I have every reason to thank him and none to resent him.

  3. 物価は上がりこそすれ、下がることはないだろう。

    ぶっかはあがりこそすれ、さがることはないだろう。

    Prices may well rise, but they certainly won't fall.
