〜ずして

A literary equivalent of 〜ないで／〜なくて, meaning 'without doing'. Appears in proverbs, formal writing and set phrases such as 戦わずして勝つ.

「〜ないで」の文語形。「戦わずして勝つ」など格言的な文で使う。

Formation: V-nai stem + ずして (する → せずして)

Example sentences

  1. 戦わずして勝つのが最善の策だ。

    たたかわずしてかつのがさいぜんのさくだ。

    Winning without fighting is the best strategy.

  2. 労せずして得た金はすぐに消える。

    ろうせずしてえたかねはすぐにきえる。

    Money gained without effort soon disappears.

  3. 期せずして、二人は同じ結論に達していた。

    きせずして、ふたりはおなじけつろんにたっしていた。

    Without either of them intending it, the two had reached the same conclusion.
