Indirect inference.

自分の観察や情報から「〜らしい状態だ」と推量する表現。

Formation: 普通形 + ようだ／ようです (N + のようだ, な-adj + なようだ)

Example sentences

  1. 山田さんは風邪を引いたようです。

    やまださんはかぜをひいたようです。

    It seems Mr. Yamada has caught a cold.

  2. 店はもう閉まっているようだ。

    みせはもうしまっているようだ。

    It seems the shop is already closed.

  3. 外は寒いようです。

    そとはさむいようです。

    It seems to be cold outside.
