Rakugo — comic storytelling
落語 らくご
Local life · Rainy day · History
One man, one cushion, a fan and a hand towel, and a story told in voices for thirty minutes with a punchline at the end. The variety halls in Asakusa, Ueno and Shinjuku run it all day; the physical comedy needs no Japanese, and a few performers give English rakugo shows monthly. Sit for one act and leave when you like.

Where to book it
Asakusa
Asakusa Engei Hall
浅草演芸ホール
¥¥ · 240 min · English: no
One of Tokyo's four permanent yose halls and the closest to Sensoji, it runs rakugo alongside manzai, magic and paper-cutting acts 365 days a year on a single long bill. It is the most traditional way to see rakugo performed live in its home neighborhood of Asakusa.
Shinjuku
Shinjuku Suehirotei
新宿末廣亭
¥¥ · 240 min · English: no
Suehirotei is the last wooden yose hall standing in Tokyo, tucked in a Shinjuku backstreet since the Edo period. Its old-fashioned interior and rotating bill of rakugo, manzai and variety acts give the most atmospheric version of a traditional yose experience.
Ueno & Yanaka
Suzumoto Engeijo
鈴本演芸場
¥¥ · 240 min · English: no
Founded in 1857, Suzumoto is Tokyo's oldest surviving yose hall and the home stage of the Rakugo Association's top-billed storytellers near Ueno. Its programs mix veteran and rising rakugoka on a rotating monthly bill rather than a tourist-oriented single show.
