Making wagashi with a confectioner
和菓子職人と練り切りを作る わがしょくにんとねりきりをつくる
Craft · With children · Rainy day · Book ahead
Ninety minutes at a workbench shaping nerikiri — sweet bean paste tinted and formed into a chrysanthemum, a maple leaf, a plum blossom — under the eye of a confectioner who has done it for thirty years, then tea with what you made. Several old shops in the low city and a few studios in Ginza and Aoyama run sessions in English. It is the best hands-on class in Tokyo for anyone who cannot cook.

Asakusa
MAIKOYA Asakusa
マイコヤ浅草
¥¥ · 90 min · English: yes
MAIKOYA runs its own dedicated tea house near Sensoji rather than booking guests into someone else's studio, combining wagashi-making with a tea ceremony and kimono wearing in one sitting. It bills itself as the only Tokyo facility offering kimono and tea ceremony together, which gives the wagashi portion a genuine cultural throughline rather than being an isolated cooking demo.
Nakameguro, Daikanyama & Ebisu
Simply Oishii Wagashi School
シンプリー・オイシイ 和菓子スクール
¥¥¥ · 120 min · English: yes
Run by an instructor who lived for years in the US and UK, the school teaches nerikiri and mochi with real cultural framing — seasonal motifs, why a sweet looks the way it does — rather than a copy-the-shape demo, and it is built around English speakers rather than translated on the fly.
Ueno & Yanaka
YANESEN Tourist Information & Culture Center
谷根千観光文化情報センター
¥¥ · 75 min · English: yes
Run through Yanaka's own tourist information and culture center rather than a general events agency, this workshop is taught by an English-speaking local instructor in the low-rise, old-Tokyo streets the neighborhood is known for. It leans into Yanaka's identity as a shitamachi craft district, pairing sweet-making with a tea tasting rather than treating it as a stand-alone cooking class.
