〜つ〜つ

Pairs two opposite or paired verbs to show two actions repeating alternately. A literary, set-phrase pattern: 行きつ戻りつ, 抜きつ抜かれつ, 押しつ押されつ.

対になる動詞を並べ、二つの動作が交互に繰り返される様子を表す文語的表現。

Formation: V-ますstem＋つ＋（対・受身の）V-ますstem＋つ

Example sentences

  1. 二人は抜きつ抜かれつのレースを続けた。

    ふたりはぬきつぬかれつのレースをつづけた。

    The two kept up a race in which they passed each other again and again.

  2. 会場の前を行きつ戻りつして開場を待った。

    かいじょうのまえをいきつもどりつしてかいじょうをまった。

    I paced back and forth in front of the venue waiting for the doors to open.

  3. 押しつ押されつしながら電車を降りた。

    おしつおされつしながらでんしゃをおりた。

    I got off the train amid all the pushing and shoving.
